Faience sculpture by Jean René Gauguin

This expressive faience sculpture by Jean René Gauguin, created for Bing & Grøndahl, is titled “Bølgenes leg” (“Play of the Waves”). It captures two mythic sea beings intertwined in a dynamic, swirling struggle atop curling waves. Their torsos, glazed in soft ivory and lilac, twist with dramatic tension, while the boldly modelled turquoise and deep green tails surge with rhythmic force. Gauguin’s characteristic focus on movement and physicality emerges in the taut musculature, sharply defined features and splayed hands, all brought to life through textured, layered glazes. The piece radiates vitality and theatricality, illustrating his fascination with myth, motion and sculptural drama.

Jean René Gauguin

Jean René Gauguin (1881-1961), son of the renowned French painter Paul Gauguin, carved his own niche through his exceptional work as a ceramic artist in Denmark. Operating primarily in the early to mid-20th century, Gauguin's contributions to ceramics are marked by a bold, sculptural approach that often drew upon mythological themes and natural motifs. Among his most acclaimed works are the "Woman Riding a Fish" sculpture and the "Birds in Flight" series, both of which showcase his mastery of form and his ability to infuse dynamism and depth into his ceramic pieces. Gauguin's work stands out for its innovative use of glazes and its unique synthesis of Art Nouveau and Symbolist influences.
